The following review is not suppose to be some kind of a professional review. If you are looking for such reviews you will not find it in my homepage. I just plan to write a simple review with my thoughts to assist my friends with the camera they want to buy since most of the time the guy at the electronics department doesn't know much about the camera apart from the price of it by scanning the barcode. If you found my website from the internet then good for you! The reviews are just my thoughts and I am happy to share with anyone. It is possible I will make the occasional mistakes and if I do please let me know about it!

 



Introduction

My fourth day with the Canon EOS 7D. Yesterday (day3) I took some sample shots to test DLA and also see the dynamic range capabilities of the 7D. For the experienced photographers it is a known fact that RAW processed images tend to have 1 to 2 stops advantage in dynamic range over Camera Processed Jpeg photos (RAW headroom). I shoot exclusively in RAW when doing fieldwork and many people including myself are very anxious to know how the RAW files are. In fact many people asked me in forums if I have the RAW for them. Well, you asked for it and here it is.


My samples today are mainly places or things that has both highlights and shadow contrast to see how the 7D performs. I used ISO 100, Wireless flash trigger with the Canon ST-E2 wireless flash trigger, my old and trustworthy 580EX II, and of course the 7D. If you have not read my thoughts of the 7D here it is (7D review). I mentioned about a button I love about the 7D, which is the RAW/JPEG button. My camera was on JPEG Large mode and with a click of this shortcut button my next photo is a RAW + JPEG. Very convenient!

 For those who requested for digital negative CR2 RAW file of the 7D here it is! But please be warned this file is over 20mb and takes a long time to download. You may download this file by clicking on the image.

I find RAW images a lot easiler to process compared to jpg photos in PS (Photoshop). The RAW headroom allows for photo rescue and also has more depth and dynamic range in post processed photos. The downsides are longer write times as well as more expensive larger capactiy cards needed to process raw files.
